INEQUALITIES
PROJECT
Arriving during a time of global instability, Inequalities, the 24th Triennale Milano International Exhibition, examines the widening disparities that shape human existence today. Themes include socioeconomic injustice, geopolitical conflict, migration, environmental breakdown, and the climate crisis. Presented at the Triennale di Milano.
To visualize these urgent issues, Pentagram partner Giorgia Lupi and her team created a generative identity system rooted in data patterns. Built from shifting pixel-like blocks, the framework is flexible, dynamic, and capable of expressing diverse statistics while maintaining a cohesive language. It extends across exhibition graphics, promotional campaigns, and the design of the accompanying catalogue.
The project was developed in close collaboration with the Triennale’s in-house team, supporting President Stefano Boeri’s vision of an identity that both conveys the exhibition’s central theme and resonates with a wide international audience. The design brief called for clarity, adaptability, and impact across multiple platforms.
The Triennale has long been a platform for influential design, with past graphic systems created by legends such as Max Huber, Massimo Vignelli, and Bob Noorda. Lupi’s approach builds on this legacy while bringing a contemporary lens, using the language of data to mirror imbalance and transformation. The result is a compelling, responsive visual system that reflects both the complexity of today’s inequalities and the role of design in making them visible.
I created a flexible animation system that could be used in both the installation, the data visualization and all the assets to promote the exposition around the city and on social media.
The challenge was to show diversity in the animation still mantaining a clean and sharp style. *
